Episode 66 – Tom Richmond

It’s my honor to end 2009 with the wonderful Tom Richmond, illustrator extraordinaire with MAD Magazine and a zillion other clients. Just go take a look at his beautifully designed website, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.  We talk about the art of caricature, the training it takes to get good and fast at it, MAD Magazine, Batman, and his amazing trip to Iraq with the likes of Stephan Pastis and Gary Trudeau. (Any time a cartoonist gets to tell about the time he hit golf balls at Saddam Hussein’s palace or when the .50 caliber machine guns fired while they were flying in a Blackhawk helicopter, is good listening.)

Tom is one of the nicest guys on the planet with an amazing mid-western work ethic, and he’s full of great information and tips for artists out there.  He also has a must-read blog, wherein he covers all sorts of topics and answers reader mail. He’s very involved with his fans, so get over there and bookmark it for your weekly amusement.

A good idea on taking a job as a character artist – that would be a great way to improve your art skills fast.

It was awesome to hear how Richmond draws his illustrations – it made made me feel better about drawing and scanning them into the computer (I don’t have a wacom board). Glad to see one of the big dogs doing a technique the amateurs can do.

    Love the show!

Katherine! Great name…I have a four year old with it. :) Thanks for listening….I think Tom Richmond was full of great information and inspiration, and was a joy to talk to. If you go back through my archive, you’ll see most of the major syndicated artists tend to draw and ink traditionally and then scan into the computer and use Photoshop to paint…with or without a Wacom tablet. Many of the web folks are purely digital now, but the bottom line is that the computer’s just a glorified airbrush…doesn’t matter how you get it done, as long as it gets done! Do you have a strip out there?

I finally got a chance to listen to the interview after my family and I were away for the holidays… great job! I learned a lot… like why I am not a professional radio person. Take away the “Wells, “Ahhhs” and Ummmms” and it’s a 20 minute interview. It was great fun and thanks for the opportunity.
