Hey, everyone else is talking about it, so why fight it? Tall Tale Radio takes on Steve Jobs and the iPad! Will it change the business of print as we know it? Will it impact cartoonists everywhere? Is it a glorified iPod? And most importantly, will it give us another reason to hate the Apple hipsters sitting in the Starbucks laughing at some YouTube video to the point where you want to throw your raspberry scone into their “decaf chai latte with three packets of splenda” faces?
Alan Gardner of the industry-standard comics news site, “The Daily Cartoonist” joins me to bring his unique perspective on the impact the iPad and devices like it may or may not have on us all. And stay tuned at the end for news and notes!

Good show as usual.
I can see the potential for it, of course, but since it’s not something I can see myself using in its current version, I’m just really curious to see what will happen with it. I only know one person who’s dying to buy one the minute it comes out. But you better believe I’m going to want to try it out when she does! I’m sure I’ll have a better idea of what it’s all about when I have it in my hands.
Enjoyed the show, it would be great if Alan would be able to come back for more shows.
Great show. I almost missed the comic book collecting aspect and realized there are already reader aps like “ComicZeal” out there… I may loose sleep thinking about this .
Looking forward to listening to this show and hearing your takes on the iPad.
When I watched Apple’s video about the iPad, I kept thinking how cool it looked and of course they do a great job pitching it. But I just don’t feel compelled to buy one right now. If they had a sketch pad app – if it had Cintiq-like capabilities- I’d be much more interested.
Great job Tom. I love your and Alan’s thoughts – I’m really interested to see who takes the lead on this too. Whether it be syndicates or sites like Zuda.
I’m also wondering if we’ll see future apps developed akin to WordPress/ComicPress where artists are afforded the opportunity to concentrate more on their art than development.
Thanks!
Irma! First off, thanks again for all your hard work on the site…it looks amazing! Secondly, yes…obviously all talk of iPad is rendered moot until we hold one and see what it can do. Of course, therein lies its power…I mean, when has Apple made something that WASN’T too cool for words once you had it in your hands? I think a device like this with such a large and responsive screen will really blow us away. I hope the content keeps up with it, or it’ll just be a very pretty “thing.”
Alec! Yes…I agree about having Alan on more. He’s incredibly knowledgeable on the subject of all things comics, and the industry has really come to rely on his site for the latest news and talk. I should make it a point to have him on more.
Scott! Yes…I have to admit, the idea of having a device like the iPad and actually getting back into comic books and such again really piqued my interest. It’s funny..I know there are comic readers and such for the laptop, but for some reason I haven’t embraced them. The iPad, or something like it, makes more sense for that…Brock Heasley just recorded a show with me and made the point that part of the allure is being able to sit back on your couch or in bed and read comics. It’s just not that convenient on a laptop. I just have this suspicion that the iPad is really going to work. Apple knows their stuff…and learned a ton of lessons from their years of iTunes and music sales.
Scott! I agree…I suspect that a third party will step up to the plate and give us a great sketchpad program for the iPad. I think that would be a huge swaying point for comics creators and artists in general. And I also agree with being patient…look at the iPhone or iPod…wait a generation or two.
Rick! I think there will be more support for comics artists and authors in general as time goes by. Apple has learned that content is king, and they want us to produce it. There will probably be various comics reader program apps that arise…hopefully there will be a common file format so we don’t get into a VHS vs. Betamax war for a few useless years.
