Episode 31 - Mark Tatulli & Dave Coverly

I was lucky enough to interview these fine gentlemen before the Reuben Awards a few weeks ago, and lo and behold, they both won in their respective categories! I made them promise to come on the show for a post-Reuben recap, but little did I know it’d be to crown them both as being on top of their game.  Mark Tatulli won for Newspaper Comic of the Year for “Lio,” and Dave Coverly of “Speed Bump” won the big enchilada itself, The Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year.  Both men are well-deserving of their awards, and it’s a lot of fun to talk to them about their experience and how winning has changed them. Not to mention how much fun it was to defeat Stephan Pastis in two separate categories, how to write without using dialog, Sergio Aragones, and the art of a really good fart joke.

In the second half of the show, we tackle the recent mini-controversy about Keith Knight crashing the Reuben Awards, and get into a great discussion about the NCS and how it needs to change in the future. We tackle the webcartoonist questions head on, so I think you’ll find it very interesting listening. (Check out the great Keith Knight’s work right here.)

Also starting this week is something I hope to make a regular feature. “Sally Forth’s” Francesco Marciuliano joins me for “Random Thoughts from Francesco.”  A diverting minute, to say the least.  And of course, there’s Tall Tale Features news, where you can catch up with all the great artists at Tall Tale Features.

Next week, after a slight delay, “The Phoenix Requiem” artist and writer, Sarah Ellerton!

Another very interesting interview with more insider looks. I didn’t really know a whole lot about the Reuben awards before this years show. I thought you guys made some good points about the “Web vs. print” thing, and I think Mark Tatulli said it best “It’s a comic, a long as it’s out there, what does it matter”, and I couldn’t agree more! I also thought the segment with Francesco Marciliano was hilarious! I’m curious how you recoded that, was it just random segments from various interviews/talks you’ve had? Or did you record/he send you a bunch of random stuff?

Keep up the good work Tom, and I’m looking forward to the next one!

Glad you liked the Francesco part…he’s become a good buddy, and I basically just called him up and we talked about random things. I’m hoping to make that a normal feature…it’s a great seque between segments, and he’s always good for a goofy non-sequitur. I just chose the most surreal of the comments and put ‘em together. :)
And yes, I love talking to Dave and Mark…they’re very honest, very open, and great guys. The reality is that the whole “webcomic/print comic” thing is a tempest in a teapot, and the sooner everyone realizes that the web is just another medium to put your stuff on, the better. The NCS needs to do its part and evolve a little, I think…that’ll happen over time.

It bugs the crap outta me that I went all the way out to La La Land and somehow never ran into you (and several other people I had wanted to talk to face-to-face) during that whole weekend, Tom!
I’m looking forward to listening to your interview with two of my favorite guys, Dave and Mark. Wasn’t Mark’s acceptance speech pure gold?

  5. Tom Racine

I know! That sucked…but then again, I was only there Saturday for a few hours. I attended one panel on the future of Newspapers (grim), and had lunch with John and Anne Hambrock, Norm Feuti and Lucas Turnbloom. I shook a couple of hands, but wasn’t there much. I looked for you, and also John Glynn…but didn’t see you. What a bummer… I didn’t actually see Mark’s speech…but I’ve heard good things. :)

Mark! My pleasure. I’m still stunned that guys like you are even answering my emails, let alone coming onto my show! I could do the Tatulli/Coverly hour every week!

  10. Michael Jantze

Fun interview. But you need to keep those two on topic. Mark and Dave wander and wonder for a living.

  11. Tom Racine

Yeah, I’d have better luck herding cats. :) It’s a blast interviewing guys like that…feels more like free form jazz than an interview. Thanks for listening, Michael…I love your animation site!
