Episode 60 - Richard Thompson
For me, it doesn’t get much better than this. I was lucky enough to meet Richard Thompson at the San Diego Comic Con this summer, and got him to sign my copy of his first book of Cul de Sac (complete with a great little drawing of Alice talking into a microphone). He was a gentleman and one of the nicest men you’ll meet, and I am honored to have him on the show. He’s the genius behind “Cul de Sac,” one of, if not THE best comic to come along in the past 5 years, as well as the wonderful “Richard’s Poor Almanac” that runs in the Washington Post. He’s got that deceptively “simple” style that you know isn’t, and like all the great strips out there, it’s his writing that sets him apart from the crowd.
We talk about his background, his long road to syndication, his art style, the state of newspapers, and his famous poem culled from the words of George W. Bush entitled “Make the Pie Higher.” (I was happy to do a dramatic interp for you.) Take a listen, and get to know one of the best cartoonists of our age.

Thanks for this, Tom and Richard! I’m a devoted fan of Cul de Sac. It’s a modern classic. You made my day by discussing Mr. Danders!

You’re welcome, Chuck! I’ve wanted Richard on the show since I first read “Cul de Sac,” and he’s always been so nice to me. Health issues slowed him down, but he made good on his promise. Wish I had a quarter of the guy’s talent!
